Romney comments at fundraiser outrage Palestinians

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the Palestinians, outraging Palestinian leaders who suggested his comments were racist and out of touch with the realities of the Middle East. Romney's campaign later said his remarks were mischaracterized.

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who ate breakfast at the luxurious King David Hotel.

Romney said some economic histories have theorized that "culture makes all the difference."

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence." He said similar disparity exists between neighboring countries, like Mexico and the United States.

Palestinian reaction was swift and pointed.

"It is a racist statement and this man doesn't realize that the Palestinian economy cannot reach its potential because there is an Israeli occupation," said Saeb Erekat, a senior aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

"It seems to me this man lacks information, knowledge, vision and understanding of this region and its people," Erekat added. "He also lacks knowledge about the Israelis themselves. I have not heard any Israeli official speak about cultural superiority."

As criticism mounted while Romney traveled to Poland, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said: "His comments were grossly mischaracterized." The campaign contends Romney's comparison of countries that are close to each other and have wide income disparities ? the U.S. and Mexico, Chile and Ecuador ? shows his comments were broader than just the comparison between Israel and Palestine.

At the White House, spokesman Josh Earnest said Romney's comments appeared to have left some people "scratching their heads a little bit."

"One of the challenges of being an actor on the international stage, particularly when you're traveling to such a sensitive part of the world, is that your comments are very closely scrutinized for meaning, for nuance, for motivation," he said.

Earnest sidestepped questions about whether Obama agreed with Romney's comments about culture, saying only that Obama believed economic issues are among the wide range of matters that would need to be addressed by the Israelis and Palestinians during peace talks.

While speaking to U.S. audiences, Romney often highlights culture as a key to economic success and emphasizes the power of the American entrepreneurial spirit compared to the values of other countries. But his decision to highlight cultural differences in a region where such differences have helped fuel violence for generations raises new questions about the former businessman's diplomacy skills.

As he has at home, Romney in Jerusalem cited a book titled, "Guns, Germs and Steel," that suggests the physical characteristics of the land account for the differences in the success of the people that live there.

"And you look at Israel and you say you have a hard time suggesting that all of the natural resources on the land could account for all the accomplishment of the people here," Romney said, before citing another book, "The Wealth and Poverty of Nations," by former Harvard professor David Landes.

This book, Romney said in Jerusalem, concludes that "if you could learn anything from the economic history of the world it's this: Culture makes all the difference. Culture makes all the difference."

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater than Romney stated. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, told donors that he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference in economic disparity between countries is so great.

His comparison of the two economies did not take into account the stifling effect the Israeli occupation has had on the Palestinian economy in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem ? areas Israel captured in 1967 where the Palestinians hope to establish a state.

In the West Bank, Palestinians have only limited self-rule. Israel controls all border crossings in and out of the territory, and continues to restrict Palestinian trade and movement. Israel annexed east Jerusalem in 1967, but has invested much less heavily there than in Jewish west Jerusalem.

And although Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip in 2005, it continues to control access and has enforced a crippling border blockade since the Islamic militant Hamas seized the territory in 2007.

The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have said the Palestinian economy can only grow if Israel lifts those restrictions.

"It's Israeli occupiers and Palestinians under occupation, and that's why Palestinians cannot realize their potential," Erekat said.

The breakfast with top donors ? including New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer ? concluded Romney's visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation tour designed to bolster his foreign policy credentials.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the Israeli capital and said the U.S. has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

In Israel, Romney did not meet with Abbas or visit the West Bank. He met briefly with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's campaign says the trip, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while abroad.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, was a political event that raised more than $1 million for Romney's campaign. It marks at least the second fundraiser during the tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500-per-person fundraiser.

Both candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a legal practice that has been used for decades.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was in keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

His remarks on the subject drew a standing ovation from the audience, which included Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

Romney's stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel.

BBB: Watch out for snake oil disguised as miracle cure - Sun, 29 Jul 2012 PST

The Federal Trade Commission recently won a $700,000 judgment against a company selling a ?permanent alcoholism?cure.?

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/?2012/07/alcoholcure.shtm

According to the FTC press release the Alcohol Cure?Foundation:

? Tricked consumers into paying hundreds or even thousands of dollars to participate in the?program

? Used ineffective dietary supplements in the supposed??cure?

? Charged consumers? financial accounts without?authorization

And when customers tried to cancel the program, ACF routinely tried to extract further payment by threatening to reveal the consumers??alcoholism.

It got me to thinking about miracle cures. How many times have I been told that there is a secret diet, drug, or machine that will cure my insulin-dependent diabetes, only to be disappointed? Unfortunately, more than?once.

The Hook: If you have a serious health condition, one for which science has no cure, you may be tempted by a product, device, or treatment that claims to help. What have you got to?lose?

The Reality: These ?miracle cures? are often unproven and useless, and the sellers are taking advantage of you by making promises they can?t?keep.

The FTC warns that phony miracle products can have dangerous interactions with medicines you?re already taking. They also might cause you to delay or stop medical treatment for your condition, even when proven treatments are available from your physician. As we have seen at the BBB, a money-back guarantee may be?meaningless.

So even though we all want to believe, I think that as the FTC urges, it is a good idea to remain skeptical. Guest blog: Sound designer Kahra Scott-Jones | VCA Anniversary ...

In our guest post series, we invite alumni, staff and current students to reflect on their time with the VCA. Here,?sound designer and research student Kahra Scott-James reflects on her decision to undertake a research degree at the VCA.

About Kahra

Kahra is trained in journalism, film/TV production, and audio with an MA (audio) from The University of Westminster, U.K. She has been involved in the media, arts and entertainment industries for several years, primarily broadcast, film, digital media and animation.

Since 1997 she has specialised in audio production with a specific focus on sound design, music and audio post. She managed an audio studio for several years with credits ranging from short films to features, interactive movies, television series, animation, commercials, documentary and games.

Kahra currently teaches audio post (JMC Adacemy) and has lectured in film sound, music video production and sound design for animation/games. She has also worked in teaching and technical support across film, video and sound (New Zealand, Australia, Ireland).

Her work has screened in a number of international festivals including the Nordisk Panorama Film Festival (Denmark), Gulf Film Festival (Dubai), Zebra Poetry Film Festival (Berlin), International Exhibition of Video and Moving Image (Spain), Annecy International Animated Film Festival (France), Hamburg Animation Festival (Germany), and the New York Underground Film Festival (U.S.A.).

Recently she has had two films selected for the New Zealand International Film Festival and Palm Springs International Film Festival, U.S.A. Kahra has also been selected as a Judge for the ATOM Short Film Awards 2012.?

Kahra?s reflection

The path to the VCA resulted from a conversation with a colleague. I had been contemplating a particular problem for a while and felt the only way to tackle it was through research. It was suggested I contact Roger Alsop. I emailed him a draft proposal, we met, and after an interview I was accepted.

Having worked for a variety of institutions and companies I have a preference for smaller organisations. The VCA seemed like a relatively compact school, with the advantage of being a part of the University of Melbourne, and having a research focus.? My field is sound design for motion picture, which incorporates film, animation, broadcast and digital media. ?As these are collaborative fields I wanted to be in an environment that housed the various art forms. My research problem stems from working in industry and issues around interdisciplinary collaboration. I felt it would help to be in an environment with a diverse body of creatives.

Kahra playing drums in a music video for ODD.

Kahra playing drums in a music video for ODD.

The main practice component of my research is the production of an animated film. I?m also developing a live performance, which involves drumming, sound effects and film. ?It?s something that ??clicked? after finding a paper that touched on film sound prior to synchronization of sound and image. ?Drummers drummed and played sound effects. So it seems like the perfect way to discuss the birth of sound design. Luckily I am a drummer (I?d probably lose an eye otherwise).

At this stage I?d say it?s early days, and for the most part I have been focused on laying a foundation so that I can move forward. I think the combination of research and creative practice will lead to some interesting developments. My cohort is an eclectic bunch, so I?m looking forward to seeing who does what along the way.

Kahra Scott-Jones is the owner of Entirely Sound, a Melbourne boutique audio sound studio working in animation, film and?commercial?media.

Breast Cancer Survivor Attributes Cancer to Fertility Treatments ...

By Jenna Rehnstrom, Anchor

jrehnstrom@kcautv.com

There?s long been debate over fertility drugs and if they could increase a woman?s risk for breast cancer. A new study found that women who used fertility drugs and got pregnant had a small increased risk of breast cancer.

Experts say it could be due to elevated production of ovarian hormones that alter breast tissue.?

Sandra Mueller of Sioux City attributes her bout with breast cancer to fertility treatments.

She?s like many moms: she?s busy and life is sometimes hectic, but Sandra?s greatest joy is spending time with her four year old son, Logan.

Still there was a time when Sandra and her husband, Rex, weren?t sure if they?d get to experience parenthood. They wanted a child so badly, they went through four grueling years of fertility treatments.

?We just knew that if we wanted this to happen ? at the time, we thought ?we have to do this?, because this is the only way it?s going to happen. It?s a very emotional process and the desire to be a parent is so great that you want to try and do what you can to make it happen,? Sandra says.

After eight rounds of invetro fertilization and countless shots, Sandra?s body wasn?t responding like they?d hope.Worse yet, the treatments were making her sick.

And when she and her husband finally decided to stop, there came more bad news: Sandra had breast cancer.

?I just kept thinking? because I didn?t know, initially, what the prognosis was going to be and I thought, I?m never going to get to be a [mom].?

Sandra chose to have a bi?lateral mastectomy. And, because the cancer was found so early, she didn?t need chemotherapy or radiation. But, Sandra suspects it was those fertility treatments that were behind the breast cancer.

?There was no other connection that I could make and I had done some research on my own. We have history of cancer in the family, but we?ve never had anybody with breast cancer,? she says.

Now a breast cancer survivor, it?s clear Sandra and Rex have had their prayers answered. They became parents in 2007, when they adopted their son, Logan.

?He?s just been the center of our world ever since and he is everything and then some and we were meant to be ? we were all meant to be together,? Sandra comments.

And does she regret the trials that brought her here? No.So, her advice to other women, maybe isn?t surprising.

?I would never tell a woman: ?don?t do fertility treatments,? I would never tell somebody that ? I would just want to say, ?ask questions ? find out about what your body?s going to be going through,? she says.

And, through it all, Sandra?s faith helped her believe this day would come. And boy, was it worth the wait.

?Being a mom has just been the most wonderful blessing and I am so grateful that I have been able to experience it.?

Army to the rescue again - this time to fill seats

LONDON (Reuters) - British troops brought in at short notice to help with security at the Olympic Games were summoned to the rescue for a second time on Sunday - this time in the less arduous role of filling empty seats.

The Games organising committee, LOCOG, turned to the army again after television footage of rows of empty seats at many venues caused outrage among Britons who had tried and failed to buy tickets under a complex allocation system.

"LOCOG has kindly offered service men and women working on venue security to make use of unutilised seating when they are off duty," a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.

"These seats will be made available to venue security personnel to utilise on a voluntary basis when off duty."

Earlier this month, the government was forced to deploy an extra 3,500 troops - some of them just back from stints in Afghanistan - after private contractor G4S failed to meet its commitment to supply 10,400 security guards.

The armed forces are now in charge of airport-style checks at several venues including the media centres, easing safety concerns in a city that was hit by bombing attacks in 2005, hours after being awarded the Olympics.

Troops from the elite Parachute Regiment have been searching buses at a roadblock going into the Olympic park.

One soldier with 18 years' service told Reuters he had learned only on Tuesday that he would be on Games duty, sharing makeshift accommodation in a room with 30 others in east London, and had had to cancel his holiday and break the news to his wife.

Others, enjoying the unexpected bonus of tickets to the women's gymnastics on Sunday, said they had been told they could not speak to the press.

The army enjoys strong public support in Britain, a reflection of widespread sympathy and respect for its losses in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Troops are not normally deployed at home except to guarantee essential public services during emergencies.

50 Shades of Grand : National Association of Baby Boomer Women ...

By Dr. Dorree Lynn, Ph.D.
NABBW?s Expert on Boomer Women Sexuality

?He follows with two sharp thrusts, and he freezes, pouring himself into me as he finds his release?? Shocked? Irritated? Excited? This quote is from the Book, ?50 Shades of Grey? by E.L. James, which gives us explicit erotic scenes and a look into a world full of racy sexual fetishes.

Whereas Harlequin novels once grabbed the hearts of so many women reading in private, this New York Times Bestseller now grabs the attention of women of all ages who, thanks to e-readers and a simple cover, are burning through the pages wherever and whenever they can.

Unlike the Fabio-driven erotic literature of the past, 50 Shades of Grey provides a detailed and uninhibited account of sexual encounters that have an edge that garnered worldwide media attention for the book and even had it pulled from some public libraries.

No wonder this book is on everybody?s lips, allowing readers to become more open to discuss their own sexuality with their friends and fueling discussions about fantasies, desires, wishes and secrets. Despite what many younger people may think, or what some older people may believe, your sexuality is your birthright forever!

Erotic literature allows people to be more perceptive and open about their sexuality, so why not you. This particular book has done exactly that, and not just for singles but for couples as well, giving them the ability to exchange fantasies, wishes and desires and to achieve a more satisfying sex life because of it. Literature in this genre gives us an opportunity to see many different sides of the possibilities of sex.

50 Shades of Grey focuses on a dominant protagonist and gives us fictional insight to the sexual dealings of a man who likes to be in control. Whether that is something that you can relate to or see yourself finding an attractive quality?the need to be controlled or in control?remember that fantasies differ between people. By opening our minds to discussion and conversation about intimate wishes we can break free and turn those fantasies into reality.

But reality is different then the world of literature, where fictional characters in erotic literature do not have to worry about the real life consequences of leading an irresponsible sex life. With the rising numbers of reported cases of STDs and HIV in the over 50 age group, we have to remember the importance of safe sex. Studies have found that among people with at least two sexual partners only 56% of people over the age of 45 reported using condoms the last time they were intimate, compared to the 80% of the 18-to-24 year olds.

Unprotected sex at any age is a behavior that needs to be stopped dead in its tracks before it stops us dead in ours. With age comes wisdom, not immunity, so use your wisdom wisely. 50 Shades of Grey?s billionaire protagonist Christian Grey might not have to worry about his sexual fate, or that of his submissive lover, however you do! Educate yourself, communicate with your partner, talk to your doctor, and then grab hold of the reins and rediscover your sexuality.

3 protesters accused of trespassing at nuke site

(AP) ? Officials say three protesters have been arrested for trespassing and defacing a building in a high-security area of a nuclear weapons site in Tennessee.

Steven Wyatt is a spokesman for the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge. He says the activists spray painted the building and defaced it with a substance that looked like blood. The protesters were arrested early Saturday.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/MU8CD3 ) the activists were members of an anti-nuclear weapons group called Transform Now Plowshares.

The group's spokeswoman, Ellen Barfield, says the three protesters had to cut through fences to get to the building.

The Department of Energy is investigating the security breach.

Y-12 maintains the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and provides nuclear fuel for the Navy and for research reactors worldwide.

Albanian weightlifter is 1st doping case in London

LONDON (AP) ? The first official doping ban during the London Olympics was handed down Saturday as the International Olympic Committee threw out Albanian weightlifter Hysen Pulaku from the Games.

The IOC said Pulaku tested positive for a banned steroid, stanozolol, on July 23, and that a backup "B'' sample confirmed the result.

The announcement came a day after Albania dropped the 19-year-old from its weightlifting team over doping suspicions. He was supposed to have competed in the 77-kilogram category.

Pulaku was tested in London, had his accreditation taken away and was kicked out of the athletes village, IOC spokesman Mark Adams said.

"It's always a sad day when a cheating athlete is caught. We hope there will be no more but the message is very clear: If you're doping we're going to catch you. There will be 5,000 tests during these games. All the medalists will be tested."

In a hearing Thursday, the lifter's coach and uncle, Sami Pulaku, "explained that neither he nor the athlete understood how such substance ended up in the body of the athlete," the IOC said.

Two Turkish lifters were also dropped by their federation at the last minute after failing doping tests.

The weightlifting competition begins Saturday with the women's 48-kilogram category.

Weightlifting has a troubled history when it comes to doping. Despite attempts to clean up the sport, several top competitors have tested positive in recent years, including former Olympic and world champion Nurcan Taylan of Turkey and Liao Hui, the 2008 Olympic champion in the men's 69-kilogram class. Both are serving doping bans and will miss the London Games.

So far, Adams said, the IOC has taken 1,001 total samples in London ? 715 urine and 286 blood.

"We do target the key sports where we have suspicions and key athletes where we have suspicions," he said.

The World Anti-Doping Agency said earlier this week that 107 athletes had been busted for doping in the six months leading up to the Olympics and kept out of the games.

Beach volleyball in the heart of central London will highlight Olympic competition Saturday, along with the first swimming medals. American rivals Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte will face off in the 400-meter individual medley.

Two-time U.S. defending gold medalist pair Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor will be the feature match in the beach volleyball grandstand.

"It's amazing. Just this area in itself is so special," Walsh Jennings said. "You have the Horse Guards right there and the changing of the guard and you get to see this and all the historic culture. NBC's Bob Costas noted a controversy over honoring Israeli athletes killed at the Olympics 40 years ago, but stopped short of offering his own protest.

As the athletes marched in the opening ceremony, Costas said that IOC President Jacques Rogge led a moment of silence for the late Israelis this week at the Athlete's Village. About 100 people were present.

"Still, for many, tonight with the world watching is the true time and place to remember those who were lost and how and why they died," Costas said.

FLASHBACK ? BERLIN 1936: "Reichsfuehrer Adolf Hitler, attired in a brown uniform and smiling genially, formally launched the Eleventh Olympiad today amid ceremonies dazzlingly brilliant despite dripping skies marked by vividly contrasting demonstrations obviously fraught with political as well as sporting significance. ... The big United States delegation, surpassed in size only by the Germans who formed the procession as rear guard, was accorded a doubtful reception. Changing plans suddenly overnight to avoid the appearance of giving only a modified Nazi salute under the original intentions to extend arms with hats in hand, the Americans reverted to the former custom of doffing their hats and placing them over the heart while giving 'eyes right.'"

Queen Elizabeth II made her acting debut as a Bond girl in just one take. The 86-year-old monarch appeared as herself in a short film for the London Olympics opening ceremony with James Bond actor Daniel Craig.

In the film, Craig arrived at her private study in Buckingham Palace, where she said "Good evening, Mr. Bond" before the pair boarded a helicopter.

BBC's director of Drama Production, Nicholas Brown, told The Telegraph newspaper that the queen gave a professional performance and "got it in one take."

FLASHBACK - LONDON 1908: "Lord Desbrough marched up with the members of the Executive Committee and said: 'Will Your Majesty graciously declare the Olympic games opened?' In reply the King said: 'I declare the Olympic games of London open.' At the completion of this ceremony cheering broke out from all parts of the stadium. After the demonstration had died down, the athletes gave three cheers for His Majesty, and then marched past the royal box. The men made a splendid appearance, though unfortunately the weather prevented all the competitors from coming out in athletic costumes. The Americans were among those who wore street clothing, but even thus attired the size of the men evoked much favorable comment."

NBC took some heat for not streaming the Olympics opening ceremony online, instead holding it for the network's telecast.

NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said it was never the intention to stream the ceremony. He said it was a complex entertainment spectacle that does not translate well online because it requires context.

The network also didn't stream the Beijing ceremony in 2008. That drew a heavy buzz and was watched by nearly 35 million people that night.

The backup begins. It's smooth sailing for buses taking games lanes out of London's Olympic Park, but other lanes north of the park into the center city are already not moving.

Pretty night in London, though. Perfect temps, no rain.

THAT'S A WRAP

Thousands of spectators, athletes and officials are pouring out of Olympic Stadium and onto the plaza.

They have spent casings from the spectacular fireworks display crunching under their feet and "Hey Jude" humming on their lips.

Everyone will sleep well after a night they'll never forget.

The Orbit observation deck still glows red. This is just the beginning, after all.

BACK AT THE BAR

As Paul McCartney sang "Hey Jude" at the end of the opening ceremony, an entire bar broke out in song with him. Locals waved the British flag as they swayed and sang "Na-Na-Na" along with McCartney.

Outside, the streets remained quiet and seemingly shuttered as a city sat glued to their television sets. Get a glimpse here: http://pic.twitter.com/2HUEpGWQ

SINGALONG

The party spirit is evident all over the host city, miles from the stadium. In the Camden section of north London, people can be heard singing along ("Na, na na na ...") and whooping loudly to Paul McCartney's rendition of "Hey, Jude."

FLAME ON

The Olympic flame in London is alight, with the fire ignited by seven up-and-coming British athletes running in formation in dark track suits.

As flashbulbs winked on and off across the stadium, the torch was brought in, its flame cutting through the darkness. In a symbolic act, the torch lit six other torches, and all seven young athletes approached the cauldron together to ignite it.

Just before it was the last leg of the torch's journey ? the ultimate British torch relay: David Beckham to Sir Steve Redgrave, one of our most famous and admired Olympians. Nobody could say this lacked the star appeal that Britons craved.

Sudanese struggle to ignite their own uprising

(AP) ? "I think my country Sudan has really hit rock bottom." Those were the last public words uttered by Usamah Mohamad, a 32-year-old Sudanese web developer-turned-citizen journalist, in a video announcing he would join protests against President Omar al-Bashir.

Mohamad, popular under his Twitter handle "simsimt," was arrested the same day his video was aired. For the next month, his family had no idea where he was. Finally they learned he was in Khartoum's high security prison and were allowed to visit him last week.

He was skinnier and darker, a sign he had been left to bake in the scorching Khartoum sun, people close to his case say. The family itself is saying nothing.

Mohamad and hundreds of others ? no less than 2,000, activists say ? have been detained the past month in a campaign unleashed by the Sudanese government. The crackdown aims to crush a new attempt to launch a protest movement calling for the ouster of al-Bashir, inspired by the Middle East's uprisings that toppled the leaders of Sudan's neighbors Egypt and Libya as well as Tunisia and Yemen.

Anti-government activists see al-Bashir's 23-year-old regime as the ripest in the region to fall. He has been weakened by the loss of oil-rich South Sudan, which became independent last year after two decades of Africa's bloodiest civil war. His regime has had to impose painful economic austerity measures to make up for the loss of revenues from the south's oil, sending inflation up to nearly 40 percent this month. The years-old rebellion in the western Darfur region continues to bleed the country. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes in that region.

"We have more reasons than any other Arab country for an uprising," said Siddique Tawer, of an opposition umbrella group. "No other country was split. Sudan was. No other country has a civil war ongoing in Darfur and (fighting along the border with the South)."

"These are enough reasons to topple a regime, aside from the corruption, oppression and the rising cost of living," he said. "The continuation of this regime is dangerous for the rest of the Sudan."

But those troubles could also prolong the life of al-Bashir's regime. Al-Bashir has showed a survivor's talent for using external threats to keep key parts of the public behind him. He is backed by a brutal security machine and a network of interests built on Islamist ideology, economic ties and tribal politics.

At an inauguration of a factory in central Sudan on July 11, al-Bashir ridiculed prospects for an uprising.

"They talk of an Arab Spring. Let me tell them that in Sudan we have a hot summer, a burning hot summer that burns its enemies," al-Bashir said, waving his cane threateningly.

So far, his prediction has borne true. Some activists fled the country, others are lying low amid the crackdown after protests by thousands raged for more than a week in June, the biggest since the Arab Spring began in late 2010. Under censorship, newspapers are not reporting on the protests.

Under a blanket of fear instilled by security agencies, several activists spoke to The Associated Press on condition anonymity to avoid detention or refused to talk at all.

"I think a popular uprising to topple the regime is not an attractive option to the Sudanese right now," said Hassan Haj Ali, a Khartoum University political science professor.

Many are wary of new turmoil after the long civil war and are bracing for a worsening economy. Sudanese also remember how unrest against al-Bashir's predecessors led to military coups, bringing Sudanese "back to square one," he said.

Sudanese and the region worry of further fragmentation, with separatist movements not only in Darfur but also in the east and in the south.

"What remains of Sudan may not hold as one bloc and may become so unstable it reflects on neighboring countries," including South Sudan, said Haj Ali. As a result, regional powers ? and the United States, he said ? may prefer "to deal with the regime in its current condition and not be embroiled in further crises."

Khartoum came close to war with South Sudan early this year. With the two sides in torturous negotiations over oil sharing and borders, al-Bashir's regime can drum up public support with anti-South rhetoric.

Sudan's crushing economic crisis has given youth groups a tool to galvanize the public behind their protest movement.

After years of a boom fueled by southern oil, Sudan has reeled since the south's independence. The crisis is threatening to worsen under austerity measures recommended by the International Monetary Fund to deal with shrinking resources.

Inflation is expected to rise further, electricity bills are going up, and consumer groups are urging a boycott of meat and poultry because of rocketing prices. The currency lost nearly half its value the past year, reaching 4.4 pounds to the dollar officially and six on the black market, according to media reports.

The youth groups, some of them working since 2009, put together a movement through social media and university activism, linking with disgruntled communities of Darfuris and others who live in Khartoum.

On June 16, protests erupted. Female students marched in Khartoum University, were joined by male students, and together they moved into the streets of the capital. Over the next six days, protests broke out at universities in Khartoum and other cities. On the Friday of that week, the strongest day of protests, regular citizens in Khartoum joined, coming out from mosques in marches that numbered several thousand.

"The people demand the downfall of the regime," some chanted, a refrain heard in other Arab uprisings.

Throughout the week, police struck back with tear gas and rubber bullets and ? in at least one case ? live ammunition, according to the London-based Sudanese rights group the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies. Several students were seriously injured. Student militias helped security agents in seizing protesters, according to ACJPS. Finally, Khartoum University's vacation was moved up to prevent more protests.

The movement planned nationwide protests on June 30, coinciding with regime celebrations for the anniversary of al-Bashir's coming to power. Under a security clampdown, protesters managed only a small turnout. But with so many troops in the streets, anniversary parades were not held.

Mohamad, the web developer, was seized at the Friday protest as he tweeted about arrests by agents of the notorious National Security Services in Khartoum's Burri district.

But friends say he may have been targeted because of his video aired the same day on Al-Jazeera English TV. "After 23 years of oppression and injustice, poverty and crime that are all committed under the current regime, change now is an inevitable must," he said in the video.

His detention without charge, while others have been freed, shows how the regime sees information about the protests as the biggest threat, said a friend of Mohammed who was held twice in custody, including once for 11 hours without water.

"He is detained for a month, a treatment reserved usually for a ringleader," the friend said.

Activists report arbitrary arrests of protesters and bloggers and their families in the middle of the night, beatings and humiliation in detention. Two Egyptian female journalists reporting for foreign media amid the unrest were deported.

Some detainees were forced to call fellow activists to arrange meetings that were really sting operations to arrest them. Interrogators threatened to release pictures of women activists wearing revealing clothes to scandalize them in Sudan's conservative society.

One student told ACJPS that an officer threatened to snap his neck while another scraped off his eyebrows, moustache and hair with a blade. "Now we've marked you and if we catch you again protesting we will cut other parts of your body," they told him.

Two activists face serious criminal charges including inciting violence against the regime. One of them, Rudwan Dawoud, who is married to an American and holds U.S. residency, was labeled a spy and could face the death sentence.

Nagui Moussa ? a 26-year old activist from the protest group Girifna, or "We are fed up" ? left to Cairo after being detained twice, deciding he was of more use outside spreading information about the protests.

He says protests may have waned ? because of both the crackdown and the fasting month of Ramadan ? but "people have changed. Why? Because they are seeing the continuous lies of the regime."

Protests in Khartoum make those in the core of Sudan realize that "the injustice is all over, in the center as in the periphery."

"People will see that the one who strikes and tortures in the south, or in Darfur, is the same as the one who strikes and tortures in the north," he said.

Peyton?s first day at camp a hit

Sirius XM Annual Celebrity Fantasy Football DraftGetty Images

There?s not much middle ground between the Jaguars and running back Maurice Jones-Drew.? He wants a new contract, and owner Shad Khan says Jones-Drew isn?t getting one.? To get Jones-Drew into camp, someone will have to blink.

We?ve seen this movie before.? The two sides seem to be completely dug in.? And then there are two possible endings. ? The player tucks tail ?twixt the hamstrings and shows up ? or the owner, G.M., or head coach decide that he?s had enough and just wants the player back.

The primary question is when will that happen?? The secondary question is whether there will be an effort (successful or otherwise) to save face.? For example, Khan could adjust the two remaining years on Jones-Drew?s current deal and claim that the player didn?t actually get a new contract.? For example, Jones-Drew could be given most of the remaining cash on his contract?($4.45 million in 2012, $4.95 million in 2012) this year, the minimum salary next year, and language that voids the contract if he reaches certain performance levels in the coming season.

That way, he?d get more money now, and potentially become a free agent in March.

Regardless, we?re no longer buying the ?honor your contract? argument.? This isn?t a normal contract.? The same system that lets the teams tear up contracts whenever they want also allows the players to take the calculated risk of holding out.? If, after all, the NFL didn?t want players to have the ability to ?violate? their contracts, the labor deal would contain a term that, for example, prevents the player from playing for any team in a given year if he doesn?t report to training camp on time.

Yes, the current system lets teams break contracts without repercussion.? And it also lets players hold out, if they?re willing to pay daily fines of $30,000 and to refund specific bonus payments that are subject to forfeiture.? Any player willing to assume that risk should be allowed to do so.? If he guesses right regarding his value to the team, he may get what he wants, or at least something close to it.

The owners, of course, don?t have to give in.? And it wouldn?t surprise us if the folks at 345 Park Avenue are urging Khan to hold firm.? It also wouldn?t surprise us if Khan, with still-fresh feeling of gratitude to 345 Park Avenue for letting him into the club, is willing to take one for the 32-member team that doesn?t like it when players take advantage of their ability to get more by holding out.

LIVE: Facebook Earnings - Business Insider

just reported its second quarter earnings.

The company modestly beat Wall Street's expectations, which were unnaturally low, having been spoon-fed by the company during its Q2 IPO process.

"These earnings are meh," one equities analyst just told us over IM.

The stock is down more than 9% in after-hours trading. It's trading below $25 for the first time.

Ad revenues were up 28% year-over-year on a quarterly basis.

That beats Wall Street's gimme estimates of 19%, but it's more worrisome revenue deceleration from a company that has a revenue multiple of 15X.

By comparison, Google's business grew 21% from a much larger base (~$40 billion annual revenues) during the second quarter. Its revenue multiple is only 5X.

It is laughable that people were recently saying this company would be bigger than Google. If it ever does become that big (an increasingly absurd notion) it won't be because of its current ads business, that's for sure.

Facebook's profits are basically flat year-over-year because its operating profit margin has decreased. That's not good news for the stock (this was supposed to be a growth story). The margin is down because Facebook is investing, which is smart, but it's hurting the company's profitability.

Facebook hel a conference call to go through earnings at 5PM EST today. We took notes.

He expects 4 to 5 billion people to have smartphones. Building great services for the devices is important. People are adopting Facebook mobile services. 540 million. 67% more than the 325 million using it a year ago. These people are more active Facebook users. Mobile users are 20% more likely to use Facebook on any given day.?

He says primarily across iOS and Android.?

He talks about Facebook Camera, Instagram, et al.

Going forward, he says, expect improvment.

We can advertising in mobile he said: Sponsored Stories have "grown quickly and demonstrated early success."

We've already scene how social dynamics can transform industries like gaming, and we're seeing this happen in other industries like music.

He says Facebook allows apps to scale and grow quickly through Facebook distribution.

He says, to paraphrase, We can imagine a day where you buy a new car and you connect it with Facebook and it lights up with music and information provided to you by your friends.

He says Facebook's mobile platform is bigger than you think. It's not just games.

The best type of advertising is a message from a friend. The more advertising includes interesting content from people you care about. Advertising on Facebook today is giving a good ROI, but it can be better and more social.?

One important aspect of social ads is that they go to mobile and desktop. Social ads in News Feed are good for ads in mobile.

By the end of June, sponsored stories revenue was $1mm per day in revenue, half coming from mobile.

She says Facebook is word-of-mouth marketing at an unprecedented scale.

We believe we are well-positioned to compete for marketing dollars throughout the marketing tunnel: from demand generation to the demand fullfillment.

Search has been doing most demand fullfillment. Facebook has had some, in gaming mostly.

Demand generation is the big target, though.

How Facebook has improved advertising

1. Rolling out new ad products.

2. Demonstrating ROI.

3. Making it easier for busines to advertise.

She's talking about Sponsored Stories, where an advertiser can highlight something normal users say about their product to that user's friends.

Early results: Sponsored Stories perform multiple times better than ads in the right-hand column. They are the cornerstone of Facebook's ad strategy.

Sponsored Stories work on mobile because they go into the news feed, and Facebook avoids the "where do we put ads on a smaller screen" problem that others face.

There has been strong interest from clients asked if they want to buy sponsored stories just for mobile. Already $1mm day in revenue, with half in mobile.

We're in an early alpha test, but interest is strong. Emarketer estimates its a $2 billion market in the US.

Independent analysis of 60 campaigns, 45 of which happned in 1H, 70% returned on ad spend 3X or better. 45% returned 5X or better.

Electronic Arts advertised Battlefield Earth and got great returns (missed the numbers, sorry).

Barclays Cards targeted NFL credit cards ads to users based on the teams they like. 60% of improved credit card applications from the campaign came from Facebook.

Wooga increased downloads by 26% in US at an attractive cost per app install using Facebook ads.

Facebook is uniquely accessible to local advertisers because they are already setting up personal accounts. 11 mm businesses have pages on FB. 7mm are used every month. Hundreds of thousands of small businesses advertise on FB.?

Last quarter tested making it easier. Page owners can turn a post into an ad with a few clicks.

For the rest of 2012, the focus will be on ramping up sponsored stories in news feed.

18% increase in the numnber of ads delivered, 9% increase in price.

Add impressions growth is slower than user-growth as people go mobile, this is despite more ad units per page on the Web.

Asia and other markets are doing better in terms of pricing. The fast volume growth does reduce worldwide price per ad.

European price per ad decreased due to the macro environment there.

Ebersmann says FB will increase the number of sponsored stories, can target them better, can increase demand by selling them better.

Gaming payments are flat, Ebersmann believes, because gaming in general is growing on mobile where Facebook does not do payments.?

955mm users

552 daily active users

Brazil, India, and Japan were contributors.

58% of users were active contributors.

Strong engagement is the foundation for everything we're trying to accomplish.

Facebook reviewed its geographic measurements. It also refined and improved its measurement of dupe accounts. This lead to an increased number of dupe accounts estimated by the company.

Biggest factor were employee stock compensation.

Headcount increased 50%. FB is hiring in mobile, platform and monetization.

In 2H, expenses should increase significantly over last year, higher than the ?rate in Q2. At this early stage, investment is a priority, not margins.

Sheryl's answer: FBX's goal is to show more relevant ads. We're at a very early alpha stage test. We're really encouraged by how interested our advertisers are.

On Yahoo deal: There is a cross-license. Also will work with Yahoo on tentpole events. She congratulations Marissa Mayer, the new CEO of Yahoo.

Mark answers.

Steady growth in engagement among all the cohorts, including younger ones.

We've always been signifcantly smaller per employee compared with the number of people we serve in the world. Says people love working at Facebook because of that. It's also part of strategy, he says. He says Facebook builds the platform, not the apps because of its limited human resources. "Over time it might make sense for us to build some of these things ourselves."

For the foreseeable future we're going to be way smaller than comparable companies.

Mark answers.

Facebook is the most used app on every mobile platform. He says, we want to increase the depth of the experience in addition to just growing users. We want to not just have apps that people use, but we want to support a development ecosystem. That's why we did the iOS integegration?there is a lot we can do "Without building out a new phone which wouldn't make much sense for us to do."

Ebersmann answers.

We have a limited amount of volume. We're working with advertisers to increase demand. We're creating better types of content that advertisers can sponsor to make it a good experience for consumers.

Sandberg answers.

Fewer than half. Working to increase that. Better engagement. Sponsored Stories will help.

Sheryl answers.

We're also seeing good results from other ads that have social context. FBX is early, but we show promising results for advertiers. We're also optimistic about early testing around mobile. What people do there is look at their News Feed and share. Ads in News Feed therefore make sense on mobile. Advertisers get a high ROI.

Ebersmann takes second question.

We made some changes to background pinging. When phones contact our services without a user being on the other end, we don't count that as usage. That had some impact. There are some drops due to holidays.

Mark answers.

The acquisition hasn't closed so there has been no integration.

"Our strategy has been to buy companies for talent." Excluding Instagram, that is must of our acquisitions and it will be going forward.

Ebersmann takes the second question.

When we look at 2H this year, we will make optimizations: drive demand, better targeting, etc. The big priority and oppty is Sponsored Stories. It's difficult to forecast what that will look like. We didn't ramp up Sponsored Stories until June. We feel like we're a in a good position. The forecasting is difficult because we're going to proceed slowly. We don't want to move quickly because we don't want to hurt user-engagement. We will learn what kind of speed of ramp up works for us.

Sheryl answers.

Looking at user-reaction.

Limiting the number we roll out. We intend to be cautious as we work on user-perception. Have not rolled out across all counties.

Sheryl answers the second question.

More than 40% of local business have no Web presence at all. Facebook has a huge advantage because those local business owners are using Facebook as users. When they use the product they see messages from other business. The product that we want them to use, Pages, is a lot like their own user profile. The leap is smaller.

Mark answers.

The basic approach we have for now is that we are building out the platform and other companies are building on top of that. You can view this is an ads and payments business, or you can view us as a platform that will transform industries and get some portion of the value for that. The media companies that are building on Open Graph, we aren't contributing as much value as we did with games, so the value coming back to Facebook is less. Over time, more nuanced experiences will become social. We'll build out the tools to get those products built and we'll build to capture the value.

Sheryl offers an answer too.

The commerce companies that really adapting social are seeing great responses. Fab is one. It's seeing 20% to 40% of its traffic from Facebook on a daily basis. We look at what people's shopping behavoirs are and want to be a major part of how people discover products.

Sheryl answers.?

We're still in that learning curve that took TV and search so long. The good news is that our ROI results are strong ? 3X and 5X. They are truly good. Our view is that our ads work, and if they continue to work we will be able to educate the market over time. We're on a good part of our growth trajectory.

Second question: no.

Ebersmaman answers last question. Obviously we're disappointed in where the stock is trading, but we think we are the same company we were before and that we'll be there in the long term.

Mark answers.

We have robust systems built around metrics in the News Feed. What we've seen is we can put in good sponsored content and not have it degrade those metrics. We're rolling out Sponsored Stories conservatively because we want to keep the quality high.

Sheryl answers.

We're optimistic. We want to make everyting people do social. We focus on how many developers are using our tool, how many of those apps are growing quickly, and how many are using ads. We're going to provide the ID and social layer for everything across Web and social layer. If you're choosing to develop a service, you'd choose to do it with us. We consider ourselves a partner company. We want to take social companies and make them big, and take big companies and make them social.
