How does the Holiday Season Affect you? | searchingforthehappiness

This is the time of year where many emotions come into play. ?There are so many back to back holidays and additional commitments to attend to. ?I often wonder how people feel at this time of year. ?Are you the type who embraces the holiday with excitement? ?Do you go out and spend money like no ones business? ?Do the holidays bring a personal dread as you will be spending time with people you may be at odds with?

The way I approach the holidays is with an open heart and a childlike excitement for what?s to come. ?At our home, the family really gets into the holiday spirit. ?The kids like to decorate their rooms with Christmas lights and a wreath on their doors. ?My husband likes to put up lights on the outside of the house. ?He is also known for building an ice rink for the kids. ?I like to decorate with?lots of candles, pinecones, pine boughs and glass ornaments. ?The kitchen gets a good workout from the cookies, bread and cakes we bake.

I love the hustle and bustle of the season. ?There is just something about playing some festive music while baking cookies as the kids hang out in the kitchen ?laughing and talking. It just warms my heart.

This is the time of year when we see our friends and family more often than any other time of the year. ?Impromptu parties are thrown together and the days blend into one long and very fun event.

One of my favorite memories from this time of year is from a few years back. ?We celebrated Christmas Eve with family and friends at our home. ?The adults were in the dining room playing games, eating and socializing. ?Our doorwall was right next to the table we sat at. ?Outside it was dark and a rather mild winter evening. ?My husband had built a good-sized ice rink. ?There must have been about 7 kids outside skating. ?Christmas music was being piped outside. ?The ice rink had been outlined with Christmas lights and there were also lights in the bushes and trees surrounding the rink. ?It was just the most beautiful sight to see the kids skating out their on Christmas Eve. ?It felt magical.

During the holidays, I avoid the malls and do any shopping for presents online. ?I feel an intense amount of gratitude about what I have and like to soak the good feelings in. ?For me, this is the time of year when stress goes out the window and the smallest of moments are sacred to me.

Bernanke's "cliff" comments break two-day rally

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street halted its two-day rally on Tuesday, after Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said the central bank lacks tools to cushion the economy from the impact of the "fiscal cliff."

The day's biggest disappointment was Hewlett-Packard Co shares , which sank to a 10-year low after the computer and printer maker swung to a fourth-quarter loss and announced a $5 billion charge related to "accounting improprieties." The stock slid 12 percent to close at $11.71.

Bernanke, in comments before the Economic Club of New York, said the Fed does not have the ability to offset the damage that would result if politicians fail to strike a deal to prevent a series of mandatory tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to go into effect early next year.

The statement caused a downdraft in the market, though the equity market cut most of its losses before the end of the day.

"This is a more realistic and pragmatic picture of where we are, compared to what we've been hearing for the past couple of days from politicians that are mostly PR stunts," said James Dailey, portfolio manager at TEAM Asset Strategy Fund in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Stocks had rallied for the last two sessions after Washington politicians sounded an encouraging note that a deal to avoid the U.S. fiscal cliff could be reached. The gains followed two weeks of sharp losses that pushed the S&P 500 down through the 200-day moving average, a key benchmark of the market's long-term trend.

The S&P ended Tuesday near that level, which was 1,382.68.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> slipped 7.45 points, or 0.06 percent, to 12,788.51 at the close. But the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> edged up 0.93 of a point, or 0.07 percent, to finish at 1,387.82. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> inched up 0.61 of a point, or 0.02 percent, to close at 2,916.68.

Dow component HP said it took an $8.8 billion charge in the quarter, with $5 billion related to its acquisition of software firm Autonomy, citing "serious accounting improprieties." HP's market value is now just $23 billion, compared with $100 billion just two years ago.

Best Buy Co shares fell 13 percent to $11.96 after the consumer electronics retailer reported a net loss of $13 million for the third quarter on weaker-than-expected sales at its established stores.

Another factor weighing on stocks was Moody's Investors Service's reduction of France's sovereign rating by one notch to Aa1 after the market's close on Monday. Moody's cited an uncertain fiscal outlook as a result of the weakening economy.

"This brings forward a whole new set of problems to the euro -zone issue. When the lifeguards, in this case, Germany and France, are in trouble, when they need to save people like Greece and Spain, that could be a big concern," Dailey said.

Earlier, data showed U.S. housing starts rose to their highest rate in more than four years in October, suggesting the housing market recovery was picking up momentum, even though permits for future construction fell.

An index of housing-related shares <.hgx> shot up 2.5 percent.

Volume was roughly 5.6 billion shares on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the NYSE MKT, compared with the year-to-date average daily closing volume of around 6.5 billion.

Advancers outnumbers decliners on the NYSE by a ratio of about 4 to 3. On Nasdaq, the opposite trend took hold, with about 13 stocks falling for every 12 that rose.

Greenhouse gases hit record high

Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere hit a new record high in 2011, the World Meteorological Organization has said.

In its annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin released on Tuesday, the organisation said that carbon dioxide levels reached 391 parts per million in 2011.

The report estimates that carbon dioxide accounts for 85% of the "radiative forcing" that leads to global temperature rises.

Other potent greenhouse gases such as methane also reached record highs.

The carbon dioxide levels appear to have been rising at a level of two parts per million each year for the last 10 years - with the latest measure being 40% higher than those at the start of the industrial revolution.

The WMO estimates that 375 billion tonnes of carbon have been released into the atmosphere since 1750, and that about half of that amount is still present in the atmosphere.

"These billions of tonnes of additional carbon dioxide in our atmosphere will remain there for centuries, causing our planet to warm further and impacting on all aspects of life on Earth," said WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud.

"Future emissions will only compound the situation."

US weather agency the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) contributed to the bulletin with their Annual Greenhouse Gas Index, which indicated that between 1990 and 2011, carbon dioxide's role in the radiative forcing that leads to warming had increased by 30%.

Levels of methane, a more potent greenhouse gas, hit a new record at 1,813 parts per billion - more than two-and-a-half times the pre-industrial level.

Concentrations of nitrous oxide, estimated to be nearly 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide, rose slightly to a record 324 parts per billion.

Mr Jarraud pointed out that until now, "carbon sinks" such as the oceans had reclaimed half of all atmospheric carbon dioxide, but that pattern would not necessarily continue.

"We have already seen that the oceans are becoming more acidic as a result of the carbon dioxide uptake, with potential repercussions for the underwater food chain and coral reefs," he said.

"There are many additional interactions between greenhouse gases, Earth's biosphere and oceans, and we need to boost our monitoring capability and scientific knowledge in order to better understand these."

Church of England votes against allowing women bishops

LONDON (Reuters) - The Church of England voted on Tuesday against legislation that would have allowed the ordination of women bishops, the culmination of more than 10 years of divisive debate, after the proposal failed to win the backing of lay members.

The General Synod, the legislative body of the Church which is made up of separate houses for bishops, clergy and laity, failed to reach the two-thirds majority required in all three houses to pass the measure.

"It was carried in the house of bishops and clergy, but lost in the house of laity. The motion having been lost ... we do not proceed any further," said Archbishop of York John Sentamu.

Women already serve as Anglican bishops in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States, but the Church of England, mother church for the world's 80 million Anglicans, has struggled to reconcile the dispute between reformers and traditionalists on whether to allow them in England.

The Church had already voted to allow women bishops in theory but Tuesday's vote, on provisions to be made for conservatives theologically opposed to senior women clergy, needed to pass before women could be enthroned as Anglican bishops in England.

We usually leave all science fiction- and movie-related news for Gamma Squad and Film Drunk, but those lazy drunks are sleeping off their mistakes from last night (they got together and watched Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot *shudder*), so we feel it?s our duty to studiously report: Y U NO DIRECT STAR WARZ, BRAD BIRD?

First, a bit of background on Bird: after creating the short-lived animated series Family Dog, he began working on The Simpsons, where he directed two episodes, ?Krusty Gets Busted? and ?Like Father, Like Clown,? and served as executive consultant for eight years. In 1999, he wrote and directed the EMOTIONAL animated classic The Iron Giant, which caught the eye of Pixar honcho John Lasseter, who collaborated with Bird on The Incredibles and Ratatouille. Last year, Bird proved he?s adept at live-action films, too, with Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protes, and the Dubai scene is one of 54,924 reasons why he should direct Star Wars: Episode VII.
