Convicted fraudster resumes accountancy business

A CONVICTED fraudster who stole more than ?30,000 from a charity for the blind has resumed her accountancy business after being released from prison, The Northern Echo can reveal.

Karen Iley, from Darlington, was jailed for a year in 2008 after stealing from the Darlington and District Talking Newspaper, while working as its volunteer treasurer.

She also stole more than ?1,500 from a business referral organisation, as well as dishonestly making a false representation to make a gain of ?2,056 by the fraudulent use of a cheque.

Having served her sentence, she is free to run her company, Iley Associates, from her offices in the town's Garden Street.

There is no suggestion she is breaking the law now and no order was made banning her from practising as an accountant when she was sentenced.

The judge at Teesside Crown Court, in June 2008, Recorder Peter Johnson, described her behaviour as "pilfering on a large scale" and "a blizzard of dishonest acts", after hearing how she gave ?20,000 of the charity's funds to her partner, so he could buy a new car.

When approached, Iley said she had moved on with her life and accused , accusing The Northern Echo of trying to "drag up the past" in an effort to sell newspapers.

Ms Iley, who is in her 50s, also appeared to dispute the circumstances of her conviction, but was unwilling to expand.

She declined to offer reassurance to her current clients when asked, saying: "The only people I care about are the people who did not judge me."

Industry body the Institute of Chartered Accountants regulates the practice of its members, but it is understood that Iley does not claim membership of the organisation.

Her company is registered with Companies House as Iley Enterprises Limited, which her website says incorporates Iley Associates.

Companies House's website lists the nature of Iley Enterprises' business as 'computer facilities management', rather than accounting.

Among the services offered by Iley, according to her website, are book-keeping, accounts and tax returns.

The website claims: "A comment that has been made over and over again by people who have met Karen is that she is not a typical accountant. She is lively, outgoing, considerate and has the distinct knack of putting you at your ease."

A spokeswoman for the talking newspaper, which records stories from The Northern Echo onto CDs, for the benefit of visually-impaired people, said the organisation did not wish to comment until after its next committee meeting in January.

Search Challenge: What?s the Connection Between These Two Places?

I was walking down one of the charming streets of San Francisco last week, I came across an extraordinary building. It was so astonishing, I took this picture.

As you can see in the above image on the left, it's obviously a building of Victorian vintage, but with a rather unexpected set of roof-top ornaments! I was struck by how curious and out-of-place it seemed with its domes and crennelation.

So I took the picture, got online and looked it up. Ah ha! Once I realized what it was, I remembered another picture I had in my files?an archival photo of another famous location here in the Valley with a rather different kind of dome.

Today's question is another simple one. (It is the beginning of the year after all?next week we'll get a little more difficult.)

What is the connection between these two buildings?

(And it's NOT that they both have domes. There's a much more interesting fact that links these buildings.)

Free calls in Gmail extended for another year

In what is becoming a holiday tradition, Google has announced that Gmail users in the United States and Canada will be able to make domestic calls using the service until the end of next year. This follows similar announcements in 2011 and 2010.

Google's voice-over-IP tool is useful for someone who needs to call a Gmail contact quickly. When it was introduced in August 2010, Google said it would be available for free until the end of that year. But in late December, Google extended the free calls through 2011 ? and at the end of that year, extended it again through?2012.

Now Google says on its Gmail blog?that free calling within the U.S. and Canada will continue through 2013. Not an entirely unexpected announcement, but welcome to the many users of the service.

Chances are Google will never charge for domestic calls, something most people get gratis or at negligible cost anyway. The more people use the service for everyday phone?calls, the more likely they are to use it eventually for long-distance calls, which Google charges for.

Using the function is a simple as pressing the "phone" icon near your contacts in Gmail (you may need to download a plugin). Alternatively, follow the simple instructions in this link.

Finless Porpoises in Peril

A survey has found that fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving a freshwater mammal, the Yangtze finless Porpoise, to the brink of extinction

Fishing, pollution and other human activities along the Yangtze River in China are driving yet another species of freshwater cetacean to the brink of extinction. That is the conclusion of a six-week survey of the river?s middle and lower stretches by the Chinese Academy of Sciences? Institute of Hydrobiology (IHB) in Wuhan and the conservation group WWF in China.

The final results of the survey will be announced in March. But the preliminary findings are worrying: the survey team spotted fewer than half of the Yangtze finless porpoises (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) that were seen during a similar expedition in 2006, which found 1,225 living in the river.

?This is really bad news,? says Wang Ding, an ecologist at the IHB who is the survey's chief scientist. ?The finless porpoises are doing much worse than previously thought along the Yangtze mainstream.?

The Yangtze finless porpoise is one of the world?s few remaining freshwater cetaceans. It is found only in the Yangtze, as well as in two adjoining lakes, called Poyang and Dongting. Scientists hope that the porpoises can avoid the same fate as the Yangtze river dolphin, or baiji (Lipotes vexillifer), which was declared effectively extinct after the 2006 survey.

Endangered ecosystem
The latest survey also found that a population of about 450 porpoises in Poyang Lake has been stable for the past six years. But only 90 of the animals remained in Dongting Lake, a decline of 40% since 2006. This means that there is a total of only around 1,000 finless porpoises in the Yangtze River basin ? making them even rarer than giant pandas in the wild.?

?Losing these big, top carnivores in the Yangtze is a pretty good indication of the terrible state of the river ecosystem,? says David Dudgeon, an ecologist at the University of Hong Kong in China, who was not involved in the survey.

"Intense human impact is to blame," says Lei Gang, director of WWF China's freshwater program. "The conflict between conservation and economic development along the Yangtze is overwhelming."

Overfishing has caused a big decline in the porpoises? food sources, says Wang, and the animals are vulnerable to unregulated fishing methods such as electro-fishing, which involves sending electrical currents into the water to stun fish before they are caught.

Pollution problem
Pollution is another major, long-term threat, says Dudgeon. The Yangtze, regarded by Chinese people as their ?mother river?, supports 40% of the country?s human population, and its riverbanks are lined with large cities, factories and power plants. According to Dudgeon, about 20 billion tons of waste are discharged into the Yangtze every year. ?This doesn?t even include diffuse pollution from agriculture or pollution caused by ships,? he says.

Like other cetacean species, the Yangtze finless porpoise uses sonar for navigation, ranging and foraging. But the high density of shipping along the Yangtze creates high levels of acoustic pollution, which interferes with the animals? sonar. ?This affects their feeding and many are also wounded or die because of ship strikes,? says Lei.

Other human activities such as dam building, land reclamation and sand dredging have contributed to large-scale habitat loss and degradation in the Yangtze River basin in recent decades, says Lei.

The Yangtze finless porpoise is currently listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. ?The new estimate may qualify them as critically endangered,? says Wang. ?If the situation does not improve significantly, they may follow the fate of baiji in 15 years.?

The murmurs surrounding a 10-inch Nokia tablet are growing louder, and they suggest that the company won't just follow the herd. Tipsters for The Verge claim that the Windows RT slate would center on a Surface-style keyboard cover with its own twists. While the add-on would shelter the screen, it would also include a battery to supplement the 10-hour lifespan of the tablet proper. Not enough? It could carry a pair of USB ports and serve as a kickstand. There may be a chance of a US release, as well: Nokia's tablet would supposedly include cellular access and head to AT&T in the US, much like its Booklet 3G ancestor. We're not surprised that the Finnish firm won't comment on the rumor, but we might not have long to wait for verification if the early 2013 release proves real.
