96% Pariah
"Pariah," from first-time writer/director Dee Rees, doesn't break much artistic ground. It tells the same gay/lesbian coming-out story that we've seen a million times. But it's told particularly well and from within a black urban context, which I don't believe has been done before. It also goes a bit deeper into the hearts and minds of the homophobic parents than typically is done, which was great. Unfortunately, it only scratches those surfaces. Kim Wayans, who of course has a long history in comedy, shows she has major dramatic talent, playing the homophobic mother of the main character. The cast is universally good, but Wayans is the stand-out. The main character is a black teenage girl in Brooklyn going through the coming-out process. She has fully come out to herself as a lesbian, and she has even found her way into a lesbian circle of friends. She even frequents a women's night club. But she hasn't told Mom or Dad about any of this, both of whom are homophobic. Mom is particularly venomous in her hatred of gays and lesbians. You can see that Dad, a detective in the NYPD, in his heart of hearts is not a bigot. Thrown into the mix to complicate things a little bit is a bisexual girl eager to have lesbian experiences to explore herself. But she tosses lesbians aside like useless candy wrappers after she's had her fun. If I were going to give Dee Rees advice, I would say this: Ms. Rees, in "Pariah" you started digging into the parent characters with some real psychological and artistic depth. I encourage you to go more deeply in that direction. I think your true gifts as an artist lie there. I would give anything to see a sequel where you explore what happened to that mother and what she's really fighting. You hint that her husband is beginning to stray, but I think there's more in there. Help us see it. Remember when that great schoolteacher tells Alike that she could "go deeper" with her poetry? You could go deeper with your films. I know you could.

NK cells play an important role in the rejection of porcine cartilage cells
Researchers from the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) have studied for the first time the response of human NK cells (Natural Killer) against porcine chondrocytes (cartilage cells).
The results of the research, published in The Journal of Immunology, indicate that these cells, characteristic of the innate immune system, play an important role in the rejection of xenotransplantation (transplantation from another species) of porcine chondrocytes.
NK cells
Together with neutrophils and macrophages, NK cells are part of the first line of cellular defence and they are involved in not-acquired immune response, that is the innate response. NK cells are responsible for identifying specific cell types (tumour, infection or foreign to the body) and destroying them by toxicity.
The number of NK cells is a minority, but their importance is increasing in the field of transplantation, according to the study's lead author, Cristina Costa, "we see that innate immunity plays an important role in regulating acquired immunity, which is critical for the rejection of transplanted organs".
Xenotransplantation
The Costa team's goal is achieving porcine chondrocytes transplantation in humans to repair cartilage injuries. The group have studied "in vitro" the response of human NK cells in the presence of pig cells. They noted that under conditions of transplant, high presence of antibodies and cytokines, human NK cells make a cytotoxic response and they lyse (destroy) foreign cells, in this case the chondrocytes.
"In this work we have characterized several molecules involved in the processes of adhesion and cytotoxicity of NK cells," explained the researcher, who believes that this work opens the way on how to continue the investigation "on one hand we have to fight the deposition of antibodies that is a critical factor in increasing the toxicity and on the other we must work to reduce cell adhesion by modifying any of the molecules we have involved."
The next step for clinical application of cartilage xenotransplantation proposed by Costa would be "the genetic modification of porcine chondrocytes, so that human NK cells don't recognize them as foreigners, thus avoiding rejection."
Transplantation of cartilage
Cartilage transplantation between humans is not been widely applied in the clinic but it has been successful in the regeneration of this tissue in traumatic injuries, especially in athletes. Autologous transplants are performed with cells from the same person and allogenic ones, with cells from another person.
"In both cases," says Costa, "the limitation is the amount of cells available. If we can get cartilage xenotransplantation it would increase the amount and quality of the cells available for transplantation." In the future, according to the researcher, "maybe we could apply the xenotransplantation of pig chondrocytes on osteoarthritis patients or even with rheumatoid arthritis" but, warns Costa, "in these cases there are other combined inflammatory and immune processes hindering the outcome of the transplantation."

But to address our nation?s infrastructure crisis and create more jobs, we need to go far beyond just repairing our aging legacy infrastructure. We must re-imagine it.

At the same time, other nations, including China, are building new infrastructure systems to meet the needs of tomorrow. ? Create a shared and comprehensive national vision. This vision needs to inspire and guide planning and action at the regional and local levels. ? Think innovation, not shovels. We won?t solve our problems with repairs or extensions. America must re-imagine its infrastructure to meet the needs of its citizens in a future that abounds with opportunities and competitive challenges. Building world-class infrastructure upgrades at home creates jobs while preparing U.S. industries to compete successfully against the mammoth wave of new infrastructure development in China, India, Brazil and other fast-growing emerging economies.
? Take the long-term, integrated view. Short-term thinking is a recipe for failure. Though there is pressure to use infrastructure projects to create jobs, creating a wish list of short-term projects has proven a mistake. For decades, the federal government provided states and localities with funding for one-off projects ? now nearly every city has a series of unconnected transportation and energy systems.

Growing up in a gang-infested area of Fort Worth, Texas, Ernest Lazo was bullied and harassed ? until he decided to take matters into his own hands.
Living in that culture, you have to learn to defend yourself, so I decided to train to have a self-defense mentality, he said.
Lazo began martial arts training in 1992. Twenty years later, hes running his own school, the Martial Arts Academy of Salina.
Lazo teaches classes for youths and adults at Carver Center through Salina Parks and Recreation, but his goal is to move his school into a permanent facility at 742 Duvall. He will share the space with boxing coach Cesareo Morales and Olympic weightlifting coach Dennis Espinosa under the banner Team Salina.
Our goal is to raise funds to renovate this building, Lazo said. We have a vision for a recreation center for low-income families.
The Martial Arts Academy of Salina teaches a form of martial arts called American Karate, Lazo said, a system that incorporates elements of Taekwondo, Judo, Jiu-jitsu, Kung Fu and American boxing. Lazo also teaches low-impact cardio and flexibility classes at Dino Strength Training Center, 703 Bishop.
My ultimate goal is to have two locations in Salina ? a martial arts training school (at 742 Duvall) and mixed martial arts training at Dino, which is more sports training, he said.

Lazo originally came to Salina in 2000 to attend Kansas Wesleyan University as a biology major with a minor in chemistry and Spanish.
I went to a college fair at Fort Worth and read about KWU, he said. It appealed to me. I came from a big urban city, and I felt Salina was the type of environment I needed to succeed.
After graduating from KWU in 2004, Lazo worked two years as an admissions officer at Bethany College. After leaving Bethany in 2006, he enrolled in online graduate courses at Fort Hays State University. In December 2008, he earned a masters degree in organizational leadership.
Taking classes in Salina
While studying for his graduate degree, Lazo began taking martial arts classes at two schools, Sun Yis Tai Kwon Do Academy and Absolute Martial Arts, which later became Premier Martial Arts. When the owner of Absolute Martial Arts saw how advanced Lazo was in his training, he was offered the job of chief instructor at the school.
After earning his graduate degree, Lazo started a new job in December 2008 with a work schedule that didnt allow him to continue teaching martial arts classes.
But after being laid off eight months later, Lazo was given a golden opportunity in fall 2009.
Premier Martial Arts had moved to Wichita, and I had parents contact me wanting their children to continue their martial arts training with me, he said. They were persistent. Because I wasnt working, I said, What do I have to lose? and agreed.
Through parks and rec
Lazo went to Salina Parks and Recreation and talked to recreation program supervisor Tim Kerbs about teaching classes through the department. Lazo began teaching his first classes at Carver Center in January 2010.
Having just completed his second year in business, Lazo said hes looking forward to expanding the school in a new location and building a team of dedicated students who will continue practicing martial arts with him for years to come.
Dedication and patience is essential to being successful in martial arts, Lazo said.
You have to repeat a move 300 times just for memory and 3,000 times for it to be muscle memory ? thats just one of hundreds of moves, he said. And in 20 years, you might be good. Even after 20 years of doing this, I still feel like a novice.
Kids gain confidence
Lazo said nothing is better than seeing a young student gain self-confidence when they begin mastering a martial arts move.
I love seeing the kids when they cant believe they can do something, and then they find out they can, he said. When they see they can do it, they get giddy.

Regardless, I also predict an Oscar nomination if not a win for director Terrance Malick.

Lucia Cape is vice president for work force at the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce.
About six years ago, she was charged with establishing the chambers work force division in response to the challenges brought on by the regions economic growth, including the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Act that brought thousands of jobs to Redstone Arsenal.
Before joining the chamber, Cape was a contractor to the Marshall Space Flight Centers Academic Affairs Office. She has also worked as a program analyst with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Cape worked as the design director for the Huntsville News and a technical editor for environmental contractors to the US Army Space and Strategic Defense Command.
Cape holds a bachelors degree in journalism and a masters degree in public administration, both from the University of Georgia.
An Army brat who twice lived on Redstone Arsenal, she is married to Huntsville native Mark Torstenson, musician and owner of The Fret Shop, and is mother to two children, Evelyn, 6, and Julian, 4.
Cape answered our 10 Questions on the job outlook for Huntsville and Madison County.
The unemployment rate for Madison County has dropped in the last couple of months. Do you see indications that this trend will continue?
The story that ASmartPlace.com tells us is that the number of jobs available in the area has been holding steady for the past 14 months with an average of more than 3,200 per month. The number of resume searches by employers has been increasing while the number of new job seekers and new resumes added to the system has fallen to an all-time low. That indicates more employer activity than job seeker activity in recent months.
What types of jobs are beginning to be filled in our area?
Our top five categories of available jobs have been the same since weve been able to track them ? IT is always first, and health care is always second. The remaining places rotate among engineering, transportation/logistics and retail.
Industry in Huntsville and Madison County is becoming more diversified each year. What sectors are seeing the most growth?
According to data we get from the state, there are a handful of occupations that are projected to grow by more than 200 positions between 2011 and 2014 ? engineers including aerospace, civil and software; health care, especially nurses and home health; and customer service in retail, dining and call centers.
What could be some of the hot careers in the next few years in our growing city?
We have several technology initiatives that are focused on growth areas for our community, so it would follow that jobs in these areas would be hot.
Energy, cybersecurity, robotics, modeling and simulation, and anything that involves the interface between computers and people and computers and other computers. Other areas of our economy that are growing are aviation and advanced manufacturing with new facilities for Raytheon and Dynetics underway.

Now that their memberships are more defined and they have established their niches, the YP groups dont need what the EmYrge Council was providing, so we are looking at a new role, one that would serve the YP business owner and entrepreneur rather than the YP organizations.
